I don’t know about other places but this isn’t the case in Silicon Valley.
There are tons of “high tech” jobs that actually require little if any
education at all. Many require only high school or high school degree.

Your friend might not work in an engineering position unless his company has
an HR department. They might not actually need to hire a software engineer
anyway. There are plenty of computer algorithms with better business
foundations.
