Ham CAP is a desktop application that will display HAM radio point-to-point propagation charts. These charts are based on Short Wave Propagation Prediction Services provided by Jeff Larsen’s radio propagation service.
You can install Ham CAP and change the default settings, but the best way to learn how to use it is to run a few predictions and see how the default settings perform. Ham CAP requires a basic understanding of Ham radio propagation charts. You will learn why this particular prediction service has been chosen and how Ham CAP uses it.
Ham CAP has two main windows. The top window contains the point-to-point predictions, while the lower window has common controls and buttons. This is a modular application with dynamic panel boards that are used to customize the user interface.
The top of the window has buttons to open Ham CAP, change the calling party number to a prediction number, set prediction parameters, and quit Ham CAP. There are buttons to view point-to-point predictions in a list view or as a table, to set the prediction filter, and to search predictions.
The lower part of the window contains a static chart and user controls to select a prediction number and change the prediction filter. There is also a button to cancel the current prediction so it does not display on the current chart. It also has a button to reset all the charts to the beginning.
A static chart has 3 columns: frequency, bit rate, and signal power. The frequency label appears on the chart in the usual point-to-point frequency reference system. It displays the frequency reference chart, because that is the frequency reference being used. For example, the frequency reference chart shows 50 to 100 MHz, and the current signal is between 50 and 100 MHz. The bit rate of the frequency range being shown is also displayed in the frequency label.
A table column contains the same information displayed in the frequency label, but in tabular format, which provides the ability to use filtering to compare data more easily. The signal power of the signal being displayed is shown next to the frequency label in the third column.
A prediction list window is shown on the right of the chart window, above the chart. It shows the predictions that are currently active. A label on the row of the prediction list shows which calling number is currently using the prediction. The prediction list shows the current prediction number, the time of day that it is active, the current bit rate, and the current signal level.

The iHamCap comes with an auto-update mechanism for updates. When your Ham CAP profile is updated, the iHamCap program checks for new profile, and then instructs the user’s system to download and install the new profile.

Assuming you have iHamCap v1.3.0 or later, follow the following steps to run HamCAP:

Open the program. It will display the main HamCAP screen.

You will see four types of bar-graphs on the main HamCAP screen. Click on the [View] button to display a list of the four types of bar-graph.

Bar-graph 1:

This is the filter-specific bar-graph. It displays the prediction filter that you selected. The prediction graph shows the HF propagation and noise attenuation between two stations connected by a line.

Bar-graph 2:

This is the GPS-specific bar-graph. It displays the predicted position of the two stations connected by a line.

Bar-graph 3:

This is the station-specific bar-graph. It displays information about the two stations connected by a line.

Bar-graph 4:

This is the filter-specific bar-graph. It displays the prediction filter that you selected. The prediction graph shows the HF propagation and noise attenuation between two stations connected by a line.

What’s New In Ham CAP?

There are three basic modes in which Ham CAP works. Once the mode is selected, Ham CAP will generate the following report.
Mode1) Planning: The user can enter in a frequency band to plan on and Ham CAP will generate the point-to-point propagation chart in this band. The user can then change the settings of the propagation model to plan on an exact location for that band.
2) Propagation Prediction: Once the band selection is made, Ham CAP will ask the user to enter the location and time. Ham CAP will predict the propagation for that frequency band for a specific time based on the settings the user has selected for the band and the location entered. Ham CAP will display the predicted propagation for the time displayed in the status bar at the bottom of the Ham CAP window.
3) Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio: Ham CAP will display the SNR for a specific location and time. This mode will display the peak SNR for a given time (based on user entry) and the given frequency band.

What is the difference between the “Peak” and “Expected SNR” modes in Ham CAP?

In the Peak mode, Ham CAP is always calculating expected SNR. The peak mode actually calculates the SNR versus time and frequency and will calculate the peak SNR. The peak results are used in the “Auto-plot predicted levels” feature. The Expected SNR shows what the expected SNR is versus time and frequency, only in case that frequency is within the bandwidth selected (in the “Planning” mode).

I have an RF spectrum analyzer, can I see the ham plot I make with Ham CAP?

No. Ham CAP is a computerized application. The point-to-point propagation chart is an image of the radar scans generated by Ham CAP. I can only figure out how to export the image from Ham CAP. I made a predicted plot for my band but Ham CAP is not reporting the predicted values on the plot, why?

Ham CAP is reporting the predicted values on the plot because the prediction was within the bandwidth selected. In the planning and peak SNR modes, if the predicted point falls outside of the frequency band selected, the predicted values for that point will not be displayed.
