Development, implementation and evaluation of an education program for tuberculosis control in primary healthcare: a cluster randomized controlled trial in Southeast Iran. To provide primary health care (PHC) professionals with information about tuberculosis (TB) and to implement and evaluate a training program for TB control. This cluster randomized controlled trial was conducted in the Eastern province, Southeast Iran, from March 2015 to May 2017. Training program was implemented in 54 primary healthcare centers (PHCs) in 18 clusters (5 PHCs per cluster). Convenience sampling was conducted in each PHC to allocate participants. The study protocol was consistent with the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology statement (STROBE). The intervention was a 10-hour training program about TB knowledge. The primary outcome was the proportion of participants with correct answers to TB-related knowledge questions after intervention. Secondary outcomes were participants’ self-perceived knowledge, attitude and practice towards TB. Two hundred and fifty-seven participants (151 male, 104 female) were studied; median age was 34 years [interquartile range (IQR) 12.5-40 years]. One hundred and thirty-six (49.8%) participants were infected with TB. The median score of participants’ correct answers to knowledge questions was 7.9 [IQR 5.6-9.8, mean (SD) 8.1 (1.31)]. Background: Research shows an increase in the rate of alcohol and other drug (AOD) use from adolescence to the late teenage years, and the onset of alcohol problems is often during the adolescent years. Prevention efforts for AOD use in adolescence have focused on specific risk factors associated with alcohol abuse, such as alcohol use expectancies and drinking contexts. This application is an attempt to directly assess the complex interrelationship between risk factors and processes of cognitive development in the context of social influence and socializing. Objectives: Risk factors for excessive alcohol use will be assessed and social behavior and cognitive development will be assessed in a sample of 120 African-American and 120 white girls, 12- to 13-years old at baseline. Longitudinal assessment of AOD use (alcohol, marijuana, and other drugs) will occur at Year 1 and Year 2. The focal topic of this research will be examined in Year 2: To evaluate the relative impact of risk factors (cognitive development) on motivation to use AOD, and the effects of AOD use on cognitive development. Methods: Three laboratory tasks will be administered at baseline. To assess cognitive development, two tasks from the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC) will be administered. The two WISC tasks are a Token Motor task and a Continuous Performance task. In a social influence task, participants will be given a series of problems to complete. In the alcohol use task, at year two, subjects will be administered an intake procedure (baseline AOD use and a history of socializing) and then an elicitation task in which they answer a series of questions concerning alcohol use, drinking contexts and drinking practices. Analyses will evaluate the impact of risk factors and AOD use on cognitive development using the specified tasks (Token Motor, Continuous Performance, Social influence) and on alcohol use behavior and drinking contexts in Year 2.
