The Tic-Toc-Tower is an arcade game released by Atari Inc. in 1979. It was Atari’s third title based on Alan Miller’s book Tic-Tac-Toe. It was designed by Ralph Baer and intended as a followup to Space Invaders in the context of an arcade game war. It was manufactured by Rockwell International as the Rockwell V1008, and marketed as a ‘two-player’ game. However, two players were not required and the game ended when the left side or top edge of the playing field was successfully completed, like Space Invaders. The game came with a single joystick and two six-button paddles. A later model, the Rockwell V1010, added lights and voice synthesis, although neither was a very useful addition. At its peak in 1980, it sold 553,900 units in the United States. Overview In a Tic-Tac-Toe game on a digital display, a player wins if there are no matching pieces across the diagonal center line. In 1980, Atari produced a Tic-Tac-Toe game marketed as the Tic-Toc-Tower. This game utilized a flat panel for the display that was elongated horizontally. The objective was to get a T or O piece down the center of the board from any valid starting position and it was game over when the piece formed a T or O in the center. The game used a keyboard to control the player moves. The game cabinet itself has a circular pattern on the front of the front glass covering the playfield. The player paddles are mounted horizontally in the pattern, and above the paddles are four buttons that can control the player’s horizontal moves. The Game Control Assembly (GCA) is mounted on the middle of the top of the cabinet and has two joysticks to control the player’s vertical moves.
