The Historical Ordnance Survey Maps are a huge resource for researchers and historians. Generally these maps are not available for download as they are only produced annually and there are over 100,000 scans available on the OpenStreetMap website. I made a little application to search for all of these POIs on OSM and allow you to easily see them on a map and open them up in your favourite map viewer.

The application also allows you to read up on all the different features of the maps and makes you aware of any irregularities.

From within the application you are able to choose which of the maps to display, which layer to display in and you can change the scale of the map to fit in any window in the OSM or Google maps applications.

You can view the list of Ordnance Survey maps in either OSM or Google maps.

Extending the application is easy and you can add additional files, databases or images to make you application work with an additional range of mapping applications.

The application can also be extended using plug-ins to support other sources and is ready to plug into any application that can use mapping data such as Google Maps, Bing Maps, ArcGIS and more.

No installation is required, the application runs from within the OSM web server with no downloading required.

Installation:

It can be installed on the live OpenStreetMap web server with only some manual configuration required. The web server can be installed from the packages available on Ubuntu or Fedora. These instructions are for Fedora.
