For example, a user may enter data by positioning the cursor over a data field on a data processing screen and pressing the “enter” key on a keyboard. The cursor is maintained in a location on the data processing screen and also maintains a position based on its location on the data processing screen, when the data field is selected for data entry. Upon actuation of the “enter” key by the user, the data field is updated with the new data.
In some data processing systems, the displayed data processing screen may be divided into a plurality of overlapping data fields. In such systems, the cursor is initially placed over an edge of the screen. In such systems, a user may enter data in the overlapping data fields without regard to the position of the cursor, as long as the cursor remains within the overlap of two or more of the data fields. Data may be entered into an arbitrary data field during a sequence of data entry operations by the user.
In some data processing systems, a record pointer can be maintained which indicates the data entry location for a data field and which may be referred to during data entry into the data field. The data processing system provides a “cursor” function for translating the record pointer to a cursor location on the displayed data processing screen and for translating the data entry location into a position of the cursor on the data processing screen. In such systems, the data entry location is converted to the cursor location by linear interpolation.
In other data processing systems, such as one described in U.S. Pat. No. 4,125,193 to Levine, a data processing system receives data entered in overlapping data fields by shifting the cursor between the overlapping data fields by linear interpolation as each new data field is entered. The system disclosed in the Levine patent monitors the number of data fields entered by a user and, once the user has entered the number of data fields into the data processing system, the system shifts the cursor between the data processing screen and the data entry location in such a manner that the cursor moves a fixed distance from the data entry location
