This invention relates to a semiconductor power module.
Semiconductor power modules including a semiconductor element (e.g., a power semiconductor element) are well known. The semiconductor power module may be used to control an electric or electronic load. The semiconductor power module has an input circuit, an output circuit, and a switching circuit that switches a current supplied to the load. Each circuit is provided on a single semiconductor substrate, such as an insulated substrate. The switching circuit has a plurality of IGBTs connected in series. Each IGBT is connected in series with a snubber circuit. The snubber circuit is provided between the switching circuit and the input circuit and between the switching circuit and the output circuit. When the semiconductor power module is turned on, the input circuit supplies a current to the switching circuit. The switching circuit conducts a current in response to the current supplied from the input circuit to control an electric or electronic load.
Since the semiconductor power module is connected to various loads, a high current has to be supplied. In order to provide a current to a load, the input circuit has to be provided with a high voltage. On the other hand, when a high voltage is provided to the input circuit, a surge voltage will be generated in the switching circuit. When a surge voltage generated in the switching circuit is applied to the input circuit, the input circuit may be damaged.
In order to prevent the input circuit from being damaged by a surge voltage, Japanese Patent Laid-Open Publication No. HEI 10-197657 discloses a semiconductor power module. The semiconductor power module has a surge absorbing circuit. The surge absorbing circuit is formed of a first insulated wire and a second insulated wire. The surge absorbing circuit absorbs a surge voltage generated in the switching circuit to prevent the surge voltage from being applied to the input circuit.
However, the semiconductor power module disclosed in the above-mentioned publication has a problem in that the surge voltage generated in the switching circuit is not effectively absorbed by the surge absorbing circuit. In the semiconductor power module, the surge absorbing circuit is fixed to the switching circuit by solder. As a result, when a surge voltage is generated in the switching circuit, a force is applied to the surge absorbing circuit by a solder joint to break the solder joint. The result is that the surge absorbing circuit is deformed. The surge absorbing circuit cannot sufficiently absorb a surge voltage.
