AutoCAD creates a “trace” of all drawing objects, by default in a temporary folder, but is a capable application for which all is possible. A drawing object may be selected and all its information is available in the drawing user interface, such as item properties, layers, block properties, or dimension properties. All objects may be edited in the drawing user interface, including dimensional properties, and geometric properties.

The screen is a graphical user interface consisting of a zoomable display of all active items and layers in a drawing or model. Drawing and model definitions can be edited, displayed, copied and pasted. An undo feature allows changes to be undone to an arbitrary point in time. Direct manipulation of drawings and components is possible from the screen, and may be supported by a history of past manipulations. The drawing and model geometry can be edited directly, and is stored in the drawing with “lock history” data.

The user interface provides direct manipulation of objects and layers. Such features include slicing, which divides or merges objects and can determine if the objects have been cut open, and via “glue”. A feature in the “Time travel” mode of the 2D Drafting module allows users to “replay” previous actions. The screen may be “live”, in which updates occur in real-time. A 3D “Drafting” module allows the user to manipulate the drawing model directly.

The user interface includes a “Tool Palette” of item tools and a “Drawing Toolbox” of drawing tools. A number of “object selection” tools are also available, for grouping items in the drawing or model. Objects, layers, and blocks can be deleted, replaced, added or moved. “Plane Tool” provides the user interface to traditional 3D modeling functionality. Autodesk introduced the 3D “Dimension Builder” with AutoCAD 2008. This tool allows direct manipulation of 3D objects in a model, including rotation, translation, and sizing.
